I’m not too fond of history because it used to be memorizing dates, places, and people. But Art History was interesting. The class was more about learning about the past and analyzing art. At Liberty, they emphasized a Christian worldview. The best part of the class was the virtual tours of Petra, the Parthenon, and the Pyramids. Below are my case studies and the final project.

Case Study Project 1 – Design Your Own Roman City

This was a pretty straight forward assignment. Nothing spectacular. Here are the instructions:

Learning Outcomes: This project will enable you to conceptualize the components necessary for civic architecture, examine the ancient Roman city and its influence on later cities, understand Roman architectural styles, understand the functions of civic architecture, and give you an awareness of all the aspects that go into designing the cities in which we live today. You will develop a stronger sense of responsibility as a citizen by helping to shape a sustainable physical environment while considering the economic, social, cultural, and religious aspects of historical and contemporary cities.

Assignment Description: This assignment asks you to take on the point of view of a Roman town planner. You are competing for a major commission to design a functioning urban center for 10,000 inhabitants. Choose a name for your town and describe the people, culture, and social structure of your town. You can build this town anywhere in the Roman world. Be creative but, most importantly, be accurate.

Commission your own Sarcophagus

This was a pretty straight forward assignment. Nothing spectacular. Here are the instructions:

Commission your own Sarcophagus:

Learning Outcomes: This project will enable you to conceptualize the components of Sarcophagus design and its importance in the ancient world. You will learn how early Christians adapted the iconography of ancient Roman art in order to create a new visual lexicon for Christianity, how this new Christian iconography developed among the early Christian church, and how Christian symbols today are different from or similar to their original meanings. You will develop a stronger sense of your responsibility as a Christian to recognize, understand, and contribute to the meanings of Christian imagery as well as how the Christian message is visualized today.

Assignment Description: Early Christians adapted imagery from the polytheistic traditions of the ancient Romans to develop a new Christian iconography – a new visual language for Christianity and its ideas. Using the style and iconography of the Christian tradition, design a sarcophagus that reflects your Christian beliefs and that sends a message to viewers about the Christian faith.”

Heaven, Hell, and Dying Well in the Middle Ages (final project)

I enjoyed analyzing these images. I learned how to really appreciate art through this class. I still carry a lot of what I learned with me when I view pieces of art. I used Photoshop to manipulate the images and I know I can do a better job on the grahics after three years of school, but it was fun to put this presentation together.

Assignment:

“You will use Google Arts Project and Prezi (or Powerpoint) to compose a thematic exhibition composed of works from the galleries listed below. This assignment assesses your ability to describe, analyze, and thematically organize works of art in the form of a virtual exhibition complete with virtual images and wall-text.  Your virtual exhibition must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the topics covered in this course.
